![]() ![]() This action was accompanied by a high-pitched "zipping" sound effect. Instead, depending on which faction dominated the following scene, the Autobot, Predacon or Combatron symbol would quickly grow from a point in the centre of the screen until it completely filled the foreground as the scene changed behind it, before shrinking back again and disappearing in the same point from where it originated. Over a decade after the conclusion of Generation 1, the Japanese Car Robots series returned to using fully detailed G1-style faction symbols for its transitions, but opted not to flip them in the traditional manner. The same style of transition continued to be used throughout the Beast Wars Neo series, with the only difference being that the "whooshing" sound was replaced by something a little more "sproingy". These wipes were accompanied by a short "whooshing" sound effect. Rather than the flipping symbols seen in Generation 1, BWII used a customized expanding iris wipe effect shaped like either the Maximal or Predacon insignia depending on the scene. The Japanese Beast Wars sequel, Beast Wars II, brought with it a new transition style of its own. The only exception is the episode " Coming of the Fuzors (Part 1)", in which the Maximal brand on Cheetor's forehead detached and grew to fill the screen as the scene changed behind it, in an apparent homage to the G1 symbol flip. The original Beast Wars series didn't feature any kind of transitions. In addition to the new transitions, various effects of "scene viewport panels" that shifted, flipped, and rotated on and around the inner walls of the cube were also used to accentuate regular cuts and edits that had received no special treatment when they aired as part of the original series. The original musical effect from Generation 1 was used. ![]() ![]() The cube then rotated to show the opposite face which featured the appropriate new symbol, and opened up again to reveal the next scene already in progress. The sides of the cube would iris shut to "enclose" the scene, with the appropriate faction symbol in the middle of the cube face. The early-90s repackaging of the original series used an altered form of the symbol flip that involved the Cybernet Space Cube. The Japanese Generation 1 follow-up series used minor variations on the original symbol flip, with each series making its own changes to the movement and visual style of the symbol. For example, the Quintessons were represented by the Decepticon symbol, while humans were typically represented by the Autobot symbol (even if the individuals in question were plotting against the Autobots during that scene). Since only the Autobot and Decepticon symbols were used, transitions to or from scenes featuring characters technically belonging to neither faction applied a generic good-guy/bad-guy approach. A distinctive musical sting accompanied this transition. Finally, it moved back into the foreground until it was large enough to fill the screen again before cutting to the next scene. The symbol then receded into a black background for a short distance and flipped around with a flare effect to reveal the symbol of the faction that would be prominent at the beginning of the next scene on its reverse-side. The preceding scene would cut to the insignia of whichever faction was most prominent at the scene's end, which was large enough to fill the screen. The scene transitions in the original Transformers series employed a "symbol flip" that was one of its iconic elements.

![]() So many things change based on the character you're playing. Jody Macgregor, Weekend Editor: The best thing about Baldur's Gate 3 is how reactive it is. I doubt I'll be any less enamoured with it in a year's time, though. It's a shame it came out right after we finalised this list, because I guarantee it would have been fighting Disco Elysium over the top spot. That we have a game that's so refined and intimate, but also expansive and open to experimentation, is an incredible treat. Not because it's bigger or more lavish, but because it's able to tell a fantastic story that's both epic and personal while also being a completely unhinged sandbox. With less time and money, Larian built something that blows Starfield-positioned thanks to release dates as its main competitor-out of the water. Like BG2 was for so many years, and Disco Elysium more recently, it's a game I will probably measure other RPGs against. I expect it will score very, very well.įraser Brown, Online Editor: I gave Baldur's Gate 3 a score of 97% (one of the highest ever) and called it the best RPG I've ever played. Next year, Baldur's Gate 3 will be eligible for voting. In recognition of its historic score, we're adding it here as a special mention. But, because of the cut-off date, it isn't in this year's list. It's unquestionably a Top 100 worthy game. ![]() Baldur's Gate 3 received the highest review score we've awarded in over a decade. But this year, one of the best RPGs of recent times was released… in August. This is how we've always done it, and it's never previously been a problem. Phil Savage, UK Editor-in-Chief: The Top 100 is voted on in July, in part because it also runs in PC Gamer magazine. Email The Top 100 Special Mention: Baldur's Gate 3 We think it's fun to dissect and compare games in this way, and as we think about applying this approach to other kinds of coverage it helps us to know what you think of it. We'd love to hear what you think of this approach. This year, in almost all cases, editors chose to promote games that fell outside of voting into the bottom section of the list. This is why games aren't all in Top 100 Score order, but in each case we've noted which writer was responsible for the change. If the majority voted in favour, then their suggestion was ratified. The writer had to make their case in front of the entire PC Gamer team, who then voted on the strength of that argument. You're welcome, Doom from 2016.įor the final step, every writer was given the opportunity to pitch for one change to the list-either promoting a game higher, or demoting it lower. In cases where they weren't, we removed the lower scoring game. ![]() This year, we made a judgement call on whether games in the same series felt different enough from each other to be worth including. Historically we've chosen to only include one game per series in the list. Then we made some additional adjustments. Once the Top 100 Score for all games had been calculated, we ordered the list from highest to lowest. ![]() Add the ground turkey, and cook until brown while using a wooden spoon or spatula to crumble. ![]() Bitter and false, artificially carbonated but lacking any joy smug and boastful in the fact that it is not a sugary soda, while betraying the drinker’s obvious suppressed desire for a sugary soda. I want to say first that my problems with Travis Scott’s spiked seltzer stem primarily from the problem I have with seltzer in general, which is that it tastes bad. How does one “review” passion? How does one pass judgement on the driving creative force within an artist which has made manifest something he has wanted to do not just for a short period of time, but for a while? How does one assess the supposed value in a person’s creative output, from the flavor, obviously, to the can design, packaging, and entirety of the brand world? And moreover, how do I, someone who does not even like non-spiked seltzer, and who is likely not within the target age demographic for this product, attempt to critique the corporate American brand output of the person Forbes calls “corporate America’s brand whisperer”? It seems unfair to Travis Scott, to the notion of creativity, and to of course Anheuser-Busch. In this case, I know from a press release that this line of spiked seltzers from Anheuser-Busch is something Travis Scott “had a strong vision for” and “wanted to do for a while.” He says it was important for him to be “heavily involved in the entire creative process from the flavor obviously, to the can design, packaging and the entirety of the brand world we’ve built.” Now, listen - I know the job of reviewing the merchandise output of famous entertainers seems glamorous, but it can be difficult. The seltzer is 7% ABV and comes in three flavors: lime, pineapple, and strawberry. Doom is a tough character to get right, because there’s a lot of complexity and nuance beneath the bravado and armored exterior. It requires that audiences understand the rivalry between Reed Richards and Victor von Doom and the way Doom covets the family his rival has built. It needs Doom to be a fully realized character coming into Secret Wars. Its emotional ending is all the more powerful because it builds on decades’ worth of Doctor Doom stories in a moment of ultimate redemption.Ĭrafting a Secret Wars movie that adheres closely to the comics requires a certain amount of legwork the MCU hasn’t had an opportunity to do yet. Hickman’s Secret Wars is a Fantastic Four story at heart, and one that plays very heavily with the twisted relationship between Doom and Reed Richards. The problem with the Secret Wars comic is that it exists as the final chapter in writer Jonathan Hickman’s much larger body of work on the Fantastic Four and Avengers titles. But if Marvel really is moving away from Kang going forward, doesn’t that make Doom the logical replacement? It can rewrite the source material so that Kang replaces Doom as the hyper-arrogant tyrant at the center of Battleworld. Similarly, Avengers: Secret Wars doesn’t inherently need Doctor Doom to succeed. Infinity War is easily among the MCU’s best films, and it didn’t exactly suffer from a lack of Silver Surfer. Just because a character is integral to a Marvel Comics storyline doesn’t mean they will or even should be used in the MCU version. Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame loosely adapted The Infinity Gauntlet yet left out some of the most important heroes from the comic like Adam Warlock and Silver Surfer. Captain America: Civil War is missing many key players from the Civil War comic. Let’s not forget, however, that Marvel Studios has a habit of diverging from the source material in significant ways. How do you tell that story without Marvel’s most megalomaniacal villain at the helm? If anything, it was a little strange when Marvel originally announced Avengers: Secret Wars with no mention of Doom himself. That series is built around the idea of Doom becoming the savior of existence and crowning himself the God Emperor of Battleworld, the hodgepodge realm that exists after the multiverse is obliterated. After all, Doom is the central villain and the single most important character in 2015’s Secret Wars. On the surface, it makes sense to pivot from Kang to Doctor Doom as the focus of the Multiverse Saga. |
